A general introduction of the characteristics and relationship of image engineering and its three layers: image processing

image analysis and image understanding is presented in this paper. Considering the current status of the researches on image engineering and the applications of image techniques as well as the distribution of related publications in China

we selected nearly hundred references from several important Chinese journals published in 1995 and classified these references into different categories according to their contents. The results provide readers with not only a general and up-to-date overview of image engineering in China

but also a convenient means of literature searching for image techniques.
